Turnovers cost Kohawks in loss to Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Coe scored the first basket of the game, but gave up a 13-0 run in the next 2:59 to Carthage, as the Red Men beat Coe 75-61.  Carthage scored 29 points off Coe's season-high 20 turnovers in the game.

The Kohawks trailed 13-3 with 15:29 to play in the first half before junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) hit a jumper to spark a 9-2 run, cutting the Carthage lead to three with 12:38 to play in the first half.  Coe wouldn't get any closer than three the rest of the game.  The Red Men held a 23-18 lead with 7:44 remaining in the opening period when they scored 11-straight points in 1:27 to take a 34-18 lead.  Coe scored the next eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Max Schmarzo (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), but trailed 39-26 at the break following a 3-pointer by Carthage's Donte Logan at the buzzer.

Coe cut the lead to 16 with 7:36 to play on another 3-pointer by Schmarzo, but Carthage responded with a 9-2 run in the next 2:43 to take its largest lead of the game at 24 during the stretch.  The Kohawks ended the game on a 13-4 run in the final 4:10.

Mataloni led the Kohawks with a game-high 17 points, while Wirth added eight points.  Schmarzo, Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) and JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) each had six points.  Light led the Kohawks with seven rebounds, with Mataloni adding six.  Wirth and Mataloni led the Kohawks with three assists apiece.

After a break for finals, Coe will return to action next Sunday, Dec. 18, as they host Milliken.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
