Kohawks drop Windy City finale

More news about: Coe

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Kohawks got a season-high 25 points from junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale), but it wasn't enough in an 82-76 loss to the University of Chicago in Coe's final game in the windy city.  A late 10-0 run by Maroons sealed the win for Chicago.

Michael Sustarsic scored the first points of the game nearly two minutes in on a layup for Chicago, but Coe's Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) hit a 3-pointer :23 later to give Coe the lead.  The Maroons bounced back with back-to-back 3-pointers by Steve Stefanou and Sam Gage to take a lead they would hold on to until early in the second half.

With 16:10 to play in the opening half, another 3-pointer by Stefanou sparked a 17-9 run by Chicago over the next 7:50 to increase the lead to 10 with 8:20 to play in the opening frame.  Coe would use a 6-0 run of its own to cut the lead to four with 5:39 left in the half, but Sustarsic hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the lead back to 10 with 4:47 left in the half.  The Kohawks ended the final 4:01 of the first half on a 17-8 run, connecting on four 3-pointers in the stretch, including two by Wirth.

Senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) hit a layup 1:09 into the second half and junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) hit a jumper to give Coe the lead with 18:01 to play.  With 9:35 to play, Charlie Hughes scored six-straight points for Chicago in less than a minute to put the Maroons up five.  The Kohawks then went on an 11-6 run in the next 2:50, with Mataloni scoring nine points, to tie the game with 5:17 to play.

Chase Davis took over for the Maroons at that point, as he scored the first four points and the last two of a 10-0 Maroon run in 3:40, as they took a 77-67 lead with 1:12 to play.  A pair of free throws from Mataloni with :04 to play and a layup by Alex Everhart (Warrensburg, Mo./Crest Ridge) at the buzzer left the Maroons with the 82-76 win.

Mataloni led three Kohawks in double figures with 25 points, just two shy of his career high.  Wirth added 14 points, while Light chipped in 12.  Sustarsic led the Maroons with 15 points, while Alex Pyper added 14.  Wirth had a game-high seven rebounds, while Light added six.  Mataloni also had a game-high five assists, with Gaster adding four.

The Kohawks will open Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night, as they host Loras.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
