Tornados Take Shootout From Choctaws, 121-107

AUSTIN, TX - The Mississippi College men's basketball team eclipsed the century mark for the first time this season, but it was not enough as they fell to Concordia Texas, 121-107, on Saturday at the CTX Field House.

The two teams combined to score 133 second half points, while the Choctaws set a school record, going 40-58 from the free throw line.  MC shot 56% (31-55) from the floor and made 5-10 three-pointers but could not overcome 30 turnovers and 14 made threes by the Tornados.

In the game, the two teams combined for 65 fouls and 87 free throw attempts.  A combined seven players fouled out in the game, paced by four of five Tornado starters being disqualified.  There were also seven technicals given out in the game with Larry Durand being ejected for CTX with two.

Senior Chad Jones scored the opening bucket for the Choctaws, but it was the only lead they would hold as Concordia led for over 59 minutes in the contest.

Senior Trevon Malone led six Choctaws in double-figures with 19 points on 5-14 shooting from the field.  Juniors Jesse Taylor and Adam Smith each scored 16 points, with Taylor making 3-4 three-pointers.

Sophomore Brandon Blake tallied 15 points, while Jones and senior Marlon Ester each put up 11 points.  Jones also led the team with seven rebounds.

Nick Haynes led Concordia with 30 points, while Kenny Williams tallied a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists.  Darius Anderson and Chris McDermott each poured in 20 points for the Tornados.  Concordia took 88 shots in the game, making 48% from the floor.

The Choctaws will not play again until after Christmas when they travel across town to play in the Magnolia Classic on December 29th and 30th at Belhaven.  MC will open up on the 29th against Millsaps at 3:00 p.m.
