ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.— There isn't a better storybook ending for a hotly contest game than the ending that came inside the walls of Thompson Gymnasium Saturday night. Elizabethtown and Scranton battled neck-and-neck all the way to the final buzzer. A mere 4.8 seconds before that final buzzer sounded, Elizabethtown's Will Schlosser sank a deep 3-point shot to down the Royals, 60-59.

On this night, pulling out to a large lead was rare for either team. There were 15 lead changes in the game, and 12 different times the former Middle Atlantic Conference rivals were tied. Elizabethtown's biggest lead of the game was an eight-point advantage, 22-18, that came all the way back at the 9:40 mark of the first half. Scranton (4-3) later grabbed a seven-point edge.

Following Jon Markel's 3-pointer that put the Jays (2-6) up by that exact eight points at 9:40, the offense went dry for the home team over the next 7:02. The Royals would grasp the lead via an 11-0 run. Luckily for E-town, it finished the half strong with points on three of its last five possessions. Kyle McConnell scored on a drive, and Joe Schwalm buried a jumper and a three to send E-town off to break down just a point, 30-29.

Scranton, try as it might, couldn't deliver a knockout punch to a young Blue Jays team that has taken its share of tough losses in the season's opening month. E-town had lost its last four games by a combined 21 points coming into play Saturday, and the Blue and Gray were determined not to let another close one slip away.

Schlosser, coming off a career-high 20-point night at Susquehanna Wednesday, wasn't left with many options on the Jays' final offensive possession of the game. He received the ball out top with under 10 seconds left and with nothing available, took a few dribbles to his right, stepped back from an already deep range and let fire. The result was all twine and an eruption from the bench -and the Elizabethtown faithful in the stands.

Ross Danzig, who scored seven points on 2-of-7 shooting for the Royals, got a strong look from the left corner at the buzzer, but his 3-pointer hit far rim and bounced away as the Blue Jays emptied the bench to mob their the freshman Schlosser for his heroics.

Head coach Bob Schlosser, in what has been a staple of his tenure at E-town, went deep into his bench with a total of 13 Blue Jays seeing playing time. Contributions from all were needed. Sophomore center Andrew Mantz was consistently in the middle of the breakneck pace of the game. Mantz finished the night with a double-double in points and rebounds. Mantz was strong in the final 20 minutes going 5-of-8 from the floor and tallying eight rebounds. His final line included 16 points and 13 rebounds.

All four of Will Schlosser's field goals were from 3-point range, as he came up with 13 points. Joining Schlosser and Mantz in double figures was the sophomore Schwalm, fresh off back-to-back 18-point games. Schwalm had 11 points Saturday, hitting half his shots (5-of-10).

As a whole the team turned in a stalwart effort on the defensive end. The Blue Jays forced 20 Scranton turnovers and did a nice job protecting the ball themselves with just 12. The combination of timely scoring and in-your-face defense led to a seventh straight win against Scranton at Thompson Gymnasium. The Royals last left E-town with a win 13 years ago. It was also the second straight nail biter between these two schools, as E-town went up to Scranton and came away with an 88-85 overtime victory last Nov. 28.

Travis Farrell's 18 points were a game-high and paced Scranton. Luke Hawk had 16 and eight boards, and Matt Swaback scored 14.

E-town has showdowns with the state of Maryland on the way. The team will return to action next Saturday afternoon looking to build on their hard fought win. The Blue Jays will travel to Salisbury for another stiff test at 3 p.m. The Sea Gulls were ranked 20th in the d3hoops.com Division III Top 25 poll just two weeks ago. E-town will quickly turn around and return home the following day to host another Maryland college, McDaniel, at Thompson Gymnasium Sunday at 3 p.m. in its final game before Winter Break.
