Stout cannot overcome cold shooting

MENOMONIE, Wis. (December 7, 2011) - UW-Stout was cold from the field all night, especially in the first half, and fell to UW-Superior, 64-51, Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout's (3-5, 0-2) shooting woes began early as they missed their first six shots, and shot just 2-of-14 to start the game.  The lack of offense led to an early 13 point deficit midway through the first period.  Another 12-2 run by the Yellowjackets (6-3, 1-1) resulted in a 20 point lead.  A three-point play by Superior's Ben Aalfs to end the half gave his team a 21-point lead at the break, their largest of the first half.

Despite the lopsided score in the first half, the game was close in other aspects.  Both teams forced nine turnovers, Superior only grabbed three more rebounds than Stout, and Stout recorded seven more shot attempts.  However, Stout's 23 percent shooting clip, compared to Superior's 63 percent, dug them a big hole.

The Blue Devils came out on a tear in the second half, reducing their 21 point deficit to seven points just six minutes into the half.  Erik Olson (Jr, Buffalo, Minn.) delivered six points over that stretch, while Jarvis Ragland (So, Milwaukee) scored five.  Superior fought back, building their lead back to 13.  Again, Stout reeled off an 8-2 run to cut the lead back down to seven, but that is the closest they could get.

Olson led Stout with 15 points, while collecting five boards and five assists.  Ragland added 14 points on 5-10 shooting from the field.  Aalfs led all players with 22 points and six assists.

Stout stays at home this weekend, when they will host UW-Platteville on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Johnson Fieldhouse.  The scheduled 6 p.m. tip-off will follow the Stout-Platteville Women's matchup, which will begin at 4 p.m.
