WILMINGTON, Ohio—Antonio Bowman came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points and five Quakers scored in double figures to lead Wilmington College past the Heidelberg University men's basketball team, 92-66, today in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, Ohio. Bowman was six-of-11 shooting from the field, including four-of-five from the three-point line.
Heidelberg (1-4, 0-2 OAC) was led by junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) (13 points), sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) (11) and junior guard Quentin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) (10), who combined for 34 of the team's 66 points. The trio was also 14-of-20 from the field, as the Student Princes shot 50.0 percent (24-of-48) overall, the second time this season they have achieve the 50.0 percent mark.
Davis also matched Fortkamp and junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep), who had eight points, for a team-high five rebounds. Davis and Givner each dished out three assists, while Davis added a pair of blocks and a steal to his line.
In addition to Bowman, who recorded a game-high five assists, for the Quakers (2-4, 1-0 OAC), Malcolm Heard poured in 19 points on a seven-of-11 day, Brandon Candella added 14 markers and corralled a game-high eight rebounds, R.J. Leppert has 12 points and Dwight Johnson tallied 11.
The Berg began the game on a 10-2 run, capped at the 16:37 mark when Fortkamp sank a jumper in the paint and converted a three-point play following a Tyler White foul on the shot.
Wilmington then went on an 11-4 run in just two minutes to pull to within 14-13 as Tim Pfeiffer canned a three-point with 14:38 on the clock.
The teams traded leads as the first half neared the midway point, until Wilmington built a six point lead at 27-21 as Candella made a lay-up at the 9:01 mark.
Following a timeout by Heidelberg, the Student Princes made a 6-2 run, as Aden, Givner and freshman forward Chris Jefferies (Concord/Painesville Riverside) sank jumpers on consecutive possessions, to cut the Quaker lead to 29-27 at the 7:07 mark.
The Berg made one field goal over the remainder of the first half and Wilmington moved to a 17-point advantage going into the break.
Heidelberg began the second half in much the same fashion as the first, going on a 10-4 run to pull to within 52-41 when senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Stivers) made one-of-two free throws at the 16:48 mark, but the 11-point deficit would be the Student Princes' smallest of the second half.
The Quakers shot a blistering 60.3 percent (35-of-58) from the field, including 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from long distance, and received 48 points for their bench.
The Berg returns to the hardwood Wednesday, Dec. 7 when it hosts Baldwin-Wallace College in an OAC game at 7 p.m. B-W head coach Duane Sheldon, former head coach at Heidelberg, will be making his fourth return to Tiffin as an opposing head coach.
