Solid Shooting Leads Devils Past Terror 66-58

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team turned in another strong performance, holding off McDaniel, 66-58, to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference.

 

The game was within three points until a late surge in the first half put the Devils in front by six, 26-20, with just 1:43 remaining before the break.

 

The Devils broke a tie with a 6-0 run behind a three-pointer from sophomore Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) and a three-point play by first-year Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School).

 

The Devils held a 30-25 advantage at halftime. The Green Terror pulled even with an 11-6 run to open the second half, and broke the game's sixth tie with a 6-1 run to lead, 45-40, with 10:04 left to play.

 

Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) hit a pair of free throws, made a steal and fed Landy for a lay-up to put the Devils in front for good, 51-50, with 5:13 on the clock.

 

McDaniel tied the game once more at the 4:24 mark, but the Devils quickly stretched the advantage back to five with 2:38 remaining.

 

The Devils hit six straight free throws in the final 31 seconds to secure the win.

 

Wixted recorded his first collegiate double-double, scoring 19 points to go with 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. He went 7-for-9 from the line as the Devils hit 21-of-28 on the night.

 

Honig matched the game-high with 19 points, hitting 7-of-7 free throw attempts and 5-of-8 from the field. He added a pair of assists and two steals as well.

 

Junior Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, hitting 4-of-5 free throws while dishing out three assists. Classmate Doug Jakiela (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) came on to give the Devils quality minutes, adding four rebounds.

 

Cullen Murray-Kemp led McDaniel (3-3, 1-1) with 15 points and five rebounds.

 

The Red Devils (4-2, 2-0) are home again on Saturday, hosting Johns Hopkins at 4:00 pm.
