McLoughlin’s Career Night Leads Spartan Men to 88-61 Win versus Oberlin

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) came off of the bench and scored a career-high 18 points as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team ran past Oberlin College, 88-61, on Wednesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 3-2 overall and will return to action this Saturday, December 3 at Hiram College at 3:00 p.m. With the loss, Oberlin drops to 2-3 on the young season.

McLoughlin's career-high came on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Sophomore center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) recorded his first career double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, while junior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) added 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.  

The Spartans jumped out to an early 10-point lead of 13-3 when Thompson nailed a jumper at 14:45. Oberlin came back with a 13-2 run of their own and led 16-15 when Andrew Fox scored on a layup at 9:56. Case then answered with a 14-4 spurt and moved ahead 29-20 with a jumper by McLoughlin with 3:10 left in the half. The Spartan lead grew to first-half high of 12, at 34-22, as junior guard Robert Scott (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) knocked down a jumper at 1:50. Oberlin was only able to trim one off of its deficit and trailed 40-29 at halftime.

In the second half, Case's lead never dipped below nine and grew to 20, at 60-40, when freshman guard Ken Gibbons (Cairnbrook, Pa./Shade) hit two free throws with 11:18 left to play.

Oberlin had three players in double-figures led by Geoff Simpson with 16.
