Kohawk defense stops Duhawks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 1:45, as they cruised to a 65-48 win over Loras Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.  Three Kohawks turned in career-highs for Coe, two with points and one with rebounds, in the victory.

Coe extended its lead to 10-2 on a jumper in the paint by freshman Caleb Miller (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) with 14:44 left in the first half.  The Duhawks then scored five-straight points in 1:23 to get back in the game before junior Seth Light(Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) took over for the Kohawks.  Light scored six-straight points for Coe to ignite a 13-3 run in the next 4:14, as Coe went ahead 23-10 with 7:41 left in the first half.

Loras cut the lead back to single digits on back-to-back 3-pointers by Connor Mooney and Jordan Harrelson with 6:46 to play in the half.  Neither team scored again until 3:29 left in the first half, when junior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) hit a 3-pointer to start an 8-1 Coe run over the next 2:40.  Mooney hit a 3-pointer with :05 left in the first half for the Duhawks, cutting the lead to 31-20.

Leading by double-digits most of the second half, Coe's lead was cut to 10 with 3:50 to play as Mooney hit back-to-back jumpers.  Joens hit another 3-pointer with 3:32 to play, starting an 11-4 Coe run over the final 2:54 of the game.  Light scored on a layup with 1:51 to play before junior Garrett Cross (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) scored Coe's final six points from the free throw line.

Light and sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) scored a career-high 17 points apiece for Coe.  Wirth also hit a career-high five 3-pointers, while Joens had a career-high three treys, finishing with nine points.  Senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) had a career-high 13 rebounds.  Junior David Mataloni(Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) and Light added six rebounds apiece.

Wirth had a game-high three assists and two steals.  Mataloni and Light also added two steals.  Harrelson led the Duhawks with 17 points off the bench, while Mooney added 16 points.

Coe scored 22 points in the paint, while limiting the Duhawks to just 10.  The Kohawks forced 17 Duhawk turnovers, while scoring 18 points off of them.  Loras scored just nine points off Coe's 15 turnovers.  Coe won the battle on the boards 43-32, while outscoring Loras 17-7 on second chance points.  The 48 points the Duhawks scored was their fewest amount of points in the 50 meetings between the two teams.

The Kohawks will return to action on Saturday, as they face the University of Dubuque.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Dubuque.
