Mitchell MBB Falls at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's basketball team dropped an 87-69 decision to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday night.

David Anderson had 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead Coast Guard to victory in a non-conference game between the two New London schools. Coast Guard ran its winning streak to three, improving to 3-1 on the season, while Mitchell dropped to 2-2.

Greg Marshall had 17 points while Kevin Sowers added a season-high 16 points as the Bears shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the field (35-63). Coast Guard was six for 15 from three-point range. Anderson was 8 for 11 from the floor, Sowers was 7 for 10 while Marshall finished 6 for 12 shooting. Jimmy Knudsen and Anderson led the way with six rebounds each for Coast Guard while Devonte Weems had a team-high four assists.

The Bears led 25-20 with 9:24 left in the first half before going on a 10-0 run and taking a 35-20 lead with 5:39 left. Marshall has six of the 10 points in the run. Coast Guard led 45-30 at the break.

Coast Guard maintained its lead, but the Bears were never really able to put another run on the Mariners. Mitchell never got closer than 12 points (48-36) in the second half while the Bears' biggest lead was 20 on three different occasions.

Sophomore Joshua Ford had 17 points and six rebounds off the bench to lead Mitchell while senior Alex Vess added 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Alex Del Rio led the Mariners with four assists. Mitchell shot 42.2 percent from the floor (27-64) while hitting seven of 24 from behind the arc (29.2 percent).

Mitchell returns to action at home against Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
