Edgewood College holds off UW-Superior for tournament title

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team likely played their best 20 minutes of the young season in the first half against UW-Superior. Still, they Eagles needed to respond to a Yellowjacket run down the stretch before pulling out a 73-67 victory in the championship game of the Merrill Thompson Memorial Classic. Edgewood College led 36-22 at halftime, and got 10 points from Cashton Craig in the last five minutes of the game to hang on for the win.

Edgewood College (3-0) was smoothly efficient in the first half, shooting 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the field and committing just two turnovers. Leading 20-16, Craig sparked a 13-2 Eagle run with a three-point basket, followed by a steal and a layup on the next possession. Derek Nkemnji made four free throws, while Kent Faurote and Dylan Rusch added baskets to complete the run.

UW-Superior (2-1) had no intention of going away quietly on their home floor. The Yellowjackets cut the lead to single digits less than three minutes into the second half. Eventually, with 3:24 to play in the game, UW-Superior's Walter Charlton hit a short baseline jumper to tie the game at 59. Craig responded immediately with his third three-point basket of the afternoon and Joe Klocek followed with a fadeaway jump shot in the lane to grab a 64-59 lead for the Eagles.

The Yellowjackets still had a chance trailing 67-65 after a Bronson Byrne layup with 23 seconds to play. UW-Superior was force to foul Craig and the junior point guard responded by making four straight free throws to seal the game.

Edgewood College shot better than 53 percent for the second straight games and made 10 of 21 attempts from the three-point line. With the win, the Eagles have now won their first three games of the season for the first time since the 1997-98 season. Craig ended up as the leading scorer with 17 points, including 3-for-4 shooting from the three-point line. Wisniewski scored 15 points, while Nkemnji added 11 points. Michael Janusek provided a lift off the bench, scoring all seven of his points in the first half. Kent Faurote had a team-high eight rebounds and played strong interior defense on the larger Yellowjacket front line. UW-Superior was led by Adam Hjelter with 16 points and Byrne with 15.

Edgewood College will play their first home game of the year on Thanksgiving Friday when they host Westminster College (Mo.). That game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
