Division II Winona State tops Simpson

WINONA, Minn. - The Simpson men's basketball team hung around with NCAA Division II powerhouse Winona State for 20 minutes, but the Warriors pulled away in the second half for an 89-57 win Friday night.

The Warriors (2-1) opened the second half on a 20-2 run, breaking open what was a 33-33 tie at intermission.

Clayton Vette scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds and Winona State shot 64.7 percent from the field in the second half.

Zack Barragan scored 12 points to lead the Storm (1-1). Chad Boston and Olu Rotibi added 10 points apiece and Elijah Knox had five assists and four steals.

The Storm face another Division II team Saturday when they take on Upper Iowa in a 5 p.m. start.
