Kohawks cruise to win in season opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - With the game tied at three early, Coe went on a 13-0 run in under two minutes, as they cruised to a 90-60 win over Faith Baptist.  Coe spread the scoring around, as 12 of the 19 players that played scored for the Kohawks.

Coe held a 26-16 lead with 11:22 to play in the first half when junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) threw down a dunk to ignite a 12-2 run over the next 2:41, as Coe increased its lead to 38-18 with 8:41 to play in the opening half.  The Kohawks held a 45-25 lead with 5:23 left in the first half, but the Eagles ended the half on a 11-4 run, leaving Coe with a 49-36 lead at halftime.

The Kohawks opened the second half on a 15-3 run in the first 5:12, as juniorDavid Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) scored eight on the run.  During the stretch, Coe scored the first 10 points of the half in 3:03.  The Kohawks led 74-51 with 7:51 to play before the Kohawks went on another 10-0 run over the next 3:03 to take their largest lead of the game at 84-51.

As a team, the Kohawks shot 57.4 percent from the field, while holding the Eagles to 36.7 percent.  Coe connected on 7-of-11 3-pointers in the first half, but struggled in the second half, as they hit just 1-of-6 attempts.  The Kohawks dominated the paint, outscoring the Eagles 40-16.  Coe also had a 41-6 advantage in bench scoring.

Four Kohawks scored in double-figures, as Mataloni had a game-high 16 points.  Sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), junior Garrett Cross(Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) and senior Jake Raney (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) added 13 points apiece.  Cross connected for a career-high five field goals, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range.  Wirth also hit three treys for the Kohawks.

Wirth finished with a career-high six rebounds, while senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson), Mataloni and Raney each had five.  Mataloni and Wirth each had a game-high four assists.  Mataloni finished with a career-high six steals, while Wirth had three.

Four Eagles scored in double-figures, led by Chad Fincham with 15 points.  Center Tyler Betz entered the game averaging 26 points in the Eagles first four games, but was held to just 12 points in the loss.

Coe will return to action Nov. 22, as they host Westminster.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
