Baldwin-Wallace Men's Basketball Team Defeats Case Western Reserve, 73-60, In 2011-12 Season Opener

BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored 12 points and was one of four Baldwin-Wallace players in double figures as the Yellow Jackets defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve, 73-60, tonight (Tuesday, November 15, 2011) in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.  

In addition to Krakowiak, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick), junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview  Heights/Walsh Jesuit) and red-shirt freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) each scored in double-digits for the Yellow Jackets.  Payne netted 11 points to go with six rebounds, Ameen had 10 points, grabbed a  team-leading seven rebounds and blocked two shots and Crowe had 10 points and five assists.  CWRU junior forward Austin Fowler led all scorers with a game-high 26 points.

The Spartans opened the scoring when sophomore center David Thompson made a jumper at the 19:46 mark of the first half to take a 2-0 lead.
 
After B-W gained a 6-2 lead, CWRU outscored B-W 15-10 and took a 17-16  lead at the 11:32 mark when freshman forward Dane McLoughlin swished a three-pointer.  The Spartans pushed their lead to five points twice, both times coming on Thompson baskets.
 
B-W fought its way back to take the lead for good at 28-27 at the 4:15 mark when junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland Seminary) broke down the Case defense for an easy layup.  B-W then extended its lead to five points at  37-32 when junior guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) converted a Spartan turnover into a layup with 1:12 remaining in the half.    
 
The Yellow Jackets closed the half with a four-point advantage at 39-35 when Payne scored two of his eight first half points on a layup with three seconds left.
 
In the second half, B-W held the Spartans scoreless for the first 6:28 and used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 51-35 when sophomore center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis DeSales) scored a layup off of a Crowe assists. The Spartans ended their drought at the 13:35 mark in the second half when Fowler made two foul shots.
 
CWRU cut B-W's lead to 10 points on two separate occasions with the last at the 5:48 mark when Fowler canned a jumper to make it 62-52. B-W then extended its lead to a game-high 17 points when sophomore forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) scored a layup to make the score 70-53 with 2:52 remaining.
 
Keys to win win were the Yellow Jacket defense forcing 17 turnovers, leading to 14 points, and out-rebounding the Spartans 39-36.  

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Friday, November 18 when they will travel to Bethany, West Virginia to play the Bisons of Bethany College at 7:00 p.m.
