Edgewood College tops Lake Forest to open season

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – After a month of practice, the Edgewood College men's basketball team finally got to play someone else as the Eagles opened their 2011-12 campaign at Lake Forest College. The Eagles controlled most of the game and closed the contest on a 14-7 run, earning their first win of the season, 61-54.

Lake Forest (0-1) quickly jumped ahead 4-3 before Kent Faurote assisted on a Derek Nkemnji layup that sparked a 6-0 run. Freshman Joe Klocek capped the run with his first career points as he completed a three-point play to put Edgewood College (1-0) ahead 9-4.

The Foresters came back and held a 19-17 advantage before another Eagle run. This time, Faurote started the run with a three-point play which was followed by a Ben Wisniewski layup. Faurote then drilled a three-point basket and Wisniewski capped the 10-0 run with another layup. Faurote and Nkemnji scored consecutive layups in the final 33 seconds of the first half, to give the Eagles a 37-31 lead at the break.

Justin Williams extended the Eagle lead to seven to start the second half before the Foresters mounted a comeback. Lake Forest scored the next six points to cut the deficit to one before Williams converted a layup. After the teams exchanged baskets, Jeff Beck put the Foresters up 45-42. However, Cashton Craig answered with a three-point basket to tie the contest.

With the score tied at 47 with just under eight minutes left, Wisniewski drilled a three-point basket to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. The lead swelled to 59-52 after a pair of Craig free throws and Nkemnji sealed the game with 12 seconds left when he made another layup, giving the Eagles the 61-54 victory.

Wisniewski led the Eagles with 16 points while Nkemnji was not far behind with 15 points. Faurote was the final Eagle in double figures with 11 points and Klocek scored seven points in his debut. Craig and Faurote led the Eagles with seven rebounds while Nkemnji dished out a team-high four assists.

Edgewood College will stay on the road this weekend when they travel to the Merrill Thomson Memorial Classic, hosted by UW-Superior. The Eagles will play Division II Lake Superior State University on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. before playing UW-Superior or Finlandia University on Saturday.
