Devil Men Survive Thriller With Terror 62-61

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team outlasted visiting McDaniel on Wednesday night, 62-61. First-year Brian Gerney (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) drove to the basket and scored with just 2.6 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Devils on top for good.

 

A strong start put the Red Devils in front 13-5 at the 12:54 mark of the first half. The Green Terror battled back to tie the game at 18 with 8:56 remaining, and used a 14-4 run to pull ahead, 32-22, with just under two minutes to play. The Devils closed out the half with lay-ups from Gerney and sophomore Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Hummelstown) to cut the deficit to 32-28 at the break.

 

McDaniel held a slim edge on the scoreboard early in the second half. The Devils pulled even, 45-45, at the 11:29 mark. The Devils took a 47-46 lead on a Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) lay-up and stretched the margin to eight at the 5:35 mark, leading 56-48.

 

Tyler Rudd knocked-down a pair of three-pointers around a Devon Lesniak lay-up to knot the game for the seventh time, 56-56, with 3:21 left to play.

 

Senior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) hit a pair of three throws to match another Lesniak score before Evan Pupelis hit one-of-two free throws to give McDaniel a 59-58 advantage. Following a Devil miss, Dolan put the Devils back in front, scoring on an assist from Gerney after a Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) steal with 1:13 on the clock.

 

Marcus Dyson converted on the other end to give the lead back to the Green Terror with just 48 seconds left in the game. The Devils turned the ball over and were forced to foul. The Terror missed the front end of the one-and-one into the hands of Landy.

 

The Devils ran the clock all the way down before Gerney drove in and scored with just 2.6 seconds remaining. The Green Terror had one final possession, but were unable to answer as the Devils held on for a key win in a very close Centennial Conference playoff race.

 

Gerney led a very balanced Devil attack with 13 points and three assists. Dolan finished with 12 points and four rebounds, hitting 4-of-4 free throws while adding an assist and a steal. Barsanti tallied nine points and four rebounds.

 

Lesniak led McDaniel (11-9, 8-5) with a game-high 18 points while Dyson finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and controlling 11 rebounds.

 

The Red Devils are home again on Saturday, hosting Washington College at 4:00 pm.
