BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore forward David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) posted a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 10 boards to help Gordon College to a 69-56 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England in men's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Campus Center.

The win was the fifth in the last six outings for the Fighting Scots, who improve to 11-13 (7-5 TCCC) on the season. UNE drops to 4-20 overall, 2-10 in conference play.

First-year Park Thomas (Glendale, Ariz.) and senior Greg Walker (Uxbridge, Mass.) combined with Dempsey to make 21 of 34 shot attempts between the three of them, as the visitors converted over 55 percent (26-for-47) of their field goal tries for the game. Thomas had 18 points to go with four steals, while Walker added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Gordon out-rebounded the Nor'easters by a 40-24 margin, and finished with a 46-18 points advantage in the paint.

For UNE, first-year Charles Fenner (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 14 points and picked up six steals. Junior Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) contributed 10 points, and sophomore Chris Ouellette (East Millinocket, Maine) came off the bench to toss in a season-high eight.

The Fighting Scots got out to an 11-0 lead after eight minutes, but after pushing the cushion to 12 saw the hosts string together a 16-7 run to make the difference only three (22-19) late in the half. Gordon closed the opening stanza with a 31-26 edge.

Fenner narrowed the gap back to three with the initial hoop of the second period, before Gordon went on a 14-2 spurt that stretched the lead to its peak of 15 (45-30) with 13:52 to play.

Still trailing by 15 midway through the frame, Big Blue battled back once again with a 13-2 run to trim the deficit to four (55-51) with 6:22 remaining.

Walker, Dempsey, and Thomas made baskets on three of the next four possessions to restore the lead to double digits and put the contest out of reach.

Both teams conclude the regular-season on Saturday with matches that tip-off at 3 p.m. The Fighting Scots visit Salve Regina University, while the Nor'easters entertain Nichols College.
