For the second consecutive game, bench contributions played a critical role in the Oswego State men's basketball team's 68-57 victory over New Paltz Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Laker subs outscored the Hawk bench, 38-9, to help Oswego State reach its' fifth 20-win season in 88 seasons with an overall record of 20-3 and a conference record of 15-1. The Hawks fell to 11-12 overall and 7-10 in the league.
Chad Burridge registered his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Chris Gilkes and Conor Monaghan added 12 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench for Oswego State. Gilkes also went 6-for-8 from the floor. New Paltz had three players score 10 points or more, including Shereef Taylor, who scored 14, Matt Devine, who contributed 13, and Harris Wichard, who compiled 10.
The Hawks held a 20-16 lead with eight minutes left in the first half following a three-pointer by Matt Devine, but the Lakers closed out the stanza with a 15-4 stretch that saw Hayden Ward score the final four points of the half in the paint. Oswego State carried a 31-24 lead into the locker room as both teams shot below 40 percent in the first 20 minutes.
Head coach Adam Stockwell's squad distanced itself from the visiting squad during the early stages of the second frame due in large part to a 16-6 run capped off by a three-point play by Monaghan, giving the Lakers a 47-33 advantage with 11:07 to play. The lead remained in double figures the rest of the way as Oswego State held its largest lead of 16 points with 1:18 on the scoreboard following a pair of free throws by Monaghan.
The Lakers shot 40.3 percent from the field on 25-for-62 shooting compared to 33.3 percent on 18-for-54 shooting for New Paltz.
