Lightning Battles in Loss, DeJesus Named to All-Tourney Team

More news about: Lehman

Samuel Batista was on fire Saturday afternoon.

The junior transfer from Division II Concordia College torched the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford for 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting, including hitting 7-of-9 from three-point range, but it wasn't enough as the Lightning fell 82-73 to the Panthers in the consolation game of the Hamilton College Tournament.

Trailing 72-71 after Daniel Heisey's layup grabbed the lead back for the Panthers with 2:51 remaining, turnovers by Batista and Jonathan DeJesus led to six crucial points for Pitt-Bradford that extended the lead to 78-71. Two free throws by Alain De La Cruz cut the deficit back to five at 78-73, but the Panthers were able to hang on from the free throw line as Heisey and Alex Van Deusen knocked down a pair each for the final margin.

Entering the game, the Lightning had a tough task ahead of it as the Panthers had been selected as the preseason No. 1 team in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference, having advanced to the conference championship game the past two seasons.

But it was Lehman who looked like the preseason No. 1 throughout much of the first half. Over the game's first 10 minutes, every starter on the Lightning got into the scoring column, and following Batista's third three-pointer, the Lightning led 25-15.

The Panthers slowly battled back, taking a 32-31 lead on Joseph Coppola's trey, their first lead since the opening minute of the game. Both teams then traded baskets in the final minutes with Batista's layup capping the half's scoring with Pitt-Bradford and Lehman deadlocked at 38.

Overshadowed by Batista's stellar shooting was the effort by DeJesus, who produced another double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and combined with his play in Friday's game, earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team. Batista's night also included 11 rebounds to go along with his 32 points.

Lehman returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Vaughn College.
