Oswego State Extends Win Streak After Defeating New Paltz 81-70

The Oswego State men's basketball team earned its' second five-game winning streak of the season as it defeated New Paltz, 81-70, Tuesday night in New Paltz.  The Lakers played unselfish basketball as they registered 20 assists on 29 field goals with Sean Michele and Brian Gebhardt combining for 12 assists.  Oswego State closes out the first half of its SUNY Athletic Conference schedule in first place with a mark of 8-1 and an overall mark of 12-3.  The Hawks dropped to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the league.

With the score 14-13 in favor of the Lakers in the first half, Gebhardt hit Chris Gilkes with a pass for a layup to jump start an 8-0 stretch to build a nine-point 22-13 advantage.  The run was capped off by a trey from the hand of Ryan Sheridan.  Sheridan pushed the lead to 13 before the end of a half on a layup, but Shereef Taylor scored two of his 21 points at the end of the frame to give Oswego State a 42-31 lead at the break.

In the second half, head coach Adam Stockwell's squad went on a 9-2 run behind five points from Chad Burridge and layups from Gebhardt and Gilkes to go ahead 59-41.  The margin swelled to 20 points with 4:41 remaining following a Burridge tip-in prompting New Paltz to call timeout.

Following the timeout, the Hawks went on a 15-1 tear to pull to within six points and a minute to play.  However, Gebhardt went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to push the lead back to 10 points, and Burridge converted a three-point play to seal the win for the Lakers. 

Hayden Ward posted his second consecutive double-double on 16 points and 14 rebounds for Oswego State, while Burridge added 22 points, six boards, and four blocks and Gilkes chipped in 12 points.  The Lakers outshot the Hawks 42.6 percent (29-of-68) to 37.3 percent (28-of-75), but New Paltz out-rebounded Oswego State 48-44.

The Lakers start a four-game homestand at Max Ziel Gymnasium when they host Buffalo State on Friday at 8 p.m.
