An efficient five-man attack let the Central College men's basketball team hold off Loras College 78-66 Saturday, sweeping the Duhawks for the first time since 1991-92.

The Dutch placed five players in double figures and shot 54.9 percent from the floor, including an impressive 58.8 percent from long range. Central, which had defeated Loras at Dubuque 74-64 Dec. 1, moved back above the .500 mark with a 9-8 overall record, including  5-4 in the Iowa Conference.

Sophomore forward Jacob Winkler came off the bench to record his first double-double, posting career highs in points (16) and rebounds (11).

Guard Demarco Turner topped the 20-point mark for the third straight time, scoring 23 and passing out three assists. Guard Brock Caves had 16 points with five assists, forward James Chapline  had 10 points and six boards and center Jack Bruns had 10 points and four rebounds.

Winkler connected on 7-of-8 shots in what coach Mike Boschee termed his best outing.

"Jacob's a talent," Boschee said. "He's talented but he's still young and inexperienced. He still doesn't understand how good he can be. Tonight he did a good job when we needed it. Hopefully he'll continue to work on his game and become more consistent."

Central burst out of the gates, scoring the game's first 11 points and jumping to an 18-2 lead at the 12-minute mark of the first half. But Loras (6-12 overall, 3-6 conference) whittled the gap to three points late in the half and was down just 39-34 at intermission after a Winkler tip-in at the buzzer.

Central's lead dwindled to two points on a couple of occasions but the Dutch always seemed to have an answer at critical times.

"Our guards made some plays because our big guys did a good job of doing what they're supposed to do by clearing space," Boschee said. "Then we stepped up and made shots. When you go 10-for-17 from 3-point range, you have a good chance to win."

But Boschee was even more impressed with Central's performance on the glass, an area where the undersized Dutch sometimes struggle. Central held a 34-24 advantage and limited Loras to just three offensive rebounds after yielding 16 in a 76-68 loss to Buena Vista Wednesday.

"We did a nice job on the boards," Boschee said. "Loras is a very good rebounding team. Buena Vista really hurt us but we held them at bay tonight."

It was a crucial victory as the Dutch prepare for a pair of road games next week.

"Loras is a very good basketball team," Boschee said. "Their record doesn't show how good they really are. I feel very good about what we accomplished.

"We've been a little up and down the whole year but we did a lot of things well tonight. Give our guys credit for bouncing back from a tough loss to beat a very good team."

Central travels to Waverly for a women's-men's doubleheader with Wartburg College Wednesday, with the men's game tipping off at 8 p.m. The Dutch were 76-64 winners over Wartburg at Pella Dec. 4. The Knights are 6-11 overall and 1-8 in league play after dropping an 82-72 decision against Coe College Saturday.
