Moravian Holds Off Second Half Rally to Defeat Drew, 63-57

The Moravian College men's basketball team led by 22 points with 11:34 remaining before Drew University pulled within two points with just 32 seconds remaining as the Greyhounds held on for a 63-57 Landmark Conference win, their first of the season, Sunday afternoon in Johnston Hall.

The Greyhounds, who led the entire game, opened the scoring on a three-point play from senior forward Chris Cullen at the 12:23 mark, and the Greyhounds led 6-0 after three-pointer by Cullen. Junior guard Asmar Capers pulled the Rangers within a point 14-13, on a three-pointer with 10:22 left in the half. 

Moravian pushed the lead to ten points, 27-17, after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Garrett Johnson with 3:25 left in the first half, and another three-pointer by Johnson sent the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 30-20 lead. The Greyhounds were 12-for-33 from the floor (36.4 percent), five-for-18 behind the three-point line and one-for-one at the foul line, and Moravian had just six turnovers. Drew was eight-of-29 from the field (27.6 percent), three-for-13 on three-pointers and one-for-two at the foul line in the opening 20 minutes, and the Rangers had a 22-19 edge in rebounds while committing ten turnovers.

The Greyhounds scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 38-20 lead after a lay-up from Johnson at the 18:13 mark. Freshman guard Kenny Gula gave Moravian a 43-21 lead with 11:34 remaining in the game before Drew went on a 19-3 run to pull within 46-40 on a three-point play by sophomore guard Terrell Brown with 6:54 to play.

Moravian pushed its lead back to nine points, 53-44, on a three-pointer from Cullen at the 3:48 mark, and the Greyhounds lead 56-48 after two free throws from sophomore guard D.J. Strayhorn with 3:08 on the clock. The Rangers climbed within a pair, 59-57, after a lay-up from Capers with 32 seconds left, but Drew would not score again as Strayhorn iced the game with four free throws.

The Greyhounds were eight-for-24 from the field (33.3 percent), two-for-six on three-pointers and 15-for-18 at the foul line in the second half and had 13 turnovers for the game. Drew, which had a 42-36 edge in rebounds, was 15-of-34 from the floor (44.1 percent), three-of-ten behind the three-point line and four-of-six at the foul line in the final 20 minutes of the game. The Rangers had 17 turnovers in the game.

Moravian used a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures including two with double-doubles. Cullen had a team high 15 points to go with ten rebounds and two assists while Johnson finished with 11 points, ten boards, three blocked shots and two steals for the Greyhounds. Sophomore center Blake English tossed in 11 points and blocked four shots for Moravian while Gula had ten points. Strayhorn finished with seven points, all at the foul line, six assists, three boards and three steals while senior guard Ryan O'Donnell had five points and three assists. Junior forward Jeff Cullinan added four points and three boards for the Greyhounds.

Capers scored a game high 21 points to lead Drew, and he also had six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while Brown had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Kyle Joyce contributed six points for the Rangers while junior forward Dara McKeon had four points, four rebounds and two assists. Freshman guard Bobby Falconiero and sophomore forward Luke Mullaney each had four points.
