NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Chris Palmer (Faribault, Minn.) scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, but the sophomore's Herculean effort was not enough Saturday afternoon, as Carleton raced out to a 36-24 halftime lead and handed the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team a 74-57 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.

Palmer knocked down 8 of 14 attempts from the field, drained all three of his free throws and hauled in those 11 boards en route to his third straight double-double and seventh of the season. Palmer — who netted 16 points and collected seven of his 11 rebounds in the second half — also eclipsed the 20-point barrier for the fifth time this season.

Jeremy Sutherland and Carter Blewan each scored 15 points and Caleb Rosenow added 13 for the defending MIAC Tournament champion Knights.

Carleton came out red-hot in the first half, scoring 11 of the game's first 13 points in building their 12-point halftime advantage. SMU tried to cut into Carleton's cushion early in the second half, but each time the Cardinals threatened, the Knights answered. Carleton then used a five-minute, 8-0 run midway through the second stanza to put the game out of reach.

The Cardinals, who fall to 3-4 in the MIAC and 8-4 overall, are now off until next Saturday, when SMU travels to Hamline for a 3 p.m. contest against the Pipers.
