No. 23 WPI downs Nor'easters in Jim Beaudry Classic

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior guard Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, Conn.) scored a game-high 15 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead No. 23 WPI to an 83-50 men's basketball victory over the University of New England in the Jim Beaudry Classic played Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center.

Robinson, who was chosen game MVP, surpassed the 1,000-point barrier on a three-pointer with 17:16 remaining in the second half. He came off the bench to tally 12 points in the opening frame to help the Engineers open up a 49-26 lead.

WPI junior center Matt Carr (Somersworth, N.H.) scored 13 points and had three steals. He was 4 of 6 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the free throw line. Junior forward Fernando Perez (Lowell, Mass.) chipped in 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Sophomore forward Jameel Galloway (Randolph, Mass.) had a game-best nine rebounds.

The Nor'easters were led by junior forward Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who scored 14 points and grabbed six boards. Senior guard Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.) added 10 points, seven caroms and three steals.

The Engineers (9-3) led from start-to-finish, jumping out to a 14-4 cushion less than five minutes into the contest. The two teams played even much of the remainder of the frame before the visitors closed with a 14-3 run over the final 3:18 to lead by 23. (49-26).

WPI used its bench liberally in the second half, with no player logging more than 18 minutes for the contest and 12 players seeing 10 or more minutes of action.

The Engineers utilized an aggressive man-to-man defense to limit UNE to 35.7 percent (20 of 56) accuracy from the floor while forcing 23 turnovers. The visitors scored more than half (42) of their points in the paint and racked up 30 points off Nor'easter turnovers.



 



Both teams return to action Wednesday. WPI opens up its NEWMAC schedule, hosting Wheaton College at 7:30 p.m. UNE (2-9) heads to Lewiston to take on Bates College at 7 p.m.
