GEORGE FOX 73, LA SIERRA 72: Bruins Begin California Trip with Win over Eagles

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Led by Cole Whitehurst's second consecutive double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, the George Fox University Bruins opened their three-game holiday swing through southern California with a 73-72 win over the La Sierra University Golden Eagles in men's basketball action Tuesday night here at the La Sierra Gym.

Whitehurst, who had 12 points and 14 boards in the Bruins' 83-75 win at Corban University on Dec. 20, was one of four Bruins who scored in double figures.  He was joined by Stephen Wiseley and Rich Smith, who also had 15 points apiece, and Mike Taylor with 12 points.  Jon Adrian scored eight points while hitting all four of his shot attempts off the bench. 

Taylor and Smith added eight rebounds each to Whitehurst's game-high total as the Bruins controlled the backboards 42-34.  Wiseley handed out five assists and made three steals, and Taylor also had three swipes.  The Bruins made 13 steals while forcing 23 La Sierra turnovers.

As a team, the Bruins shot .441 (30-68) from the field, hitting 15-34 in each half.  They were only 1-16 (.063) from beyond the arc, however, and also struggled at the line, making only 12-27 (.444).  Nevertheless, they were able to pull out the one-point win after holding a 33-30 lead at the half.

La Sierra shot .491 (28-57) from the floor, and kept it a close game by hitting .654 (17-26) in the second half.  However, the Golden Eagles were but only 2-9 (.222) from three-point range and .583 (14-24) from the charity stripe. 

Isaac Waters led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 19 points, while Taylor Scharfenberg added 11 and Daveon Woods and Depaul Williams had 10 apiece.  Scharfenberg and Connor Madden had eight rebounds each, and Waters passed out four assists.

NEXT: George Fox (3-6), with two consecutive victories, will try to make it three in a row at the University of La Verne Wednesday.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ... La Sierra (2-8) visits San Diego Christian College Friday at 2:00 p.m.
