SUNY Oneonta men's basketball comes up short against Ithaca

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team had five players in double figures today, but came up short in a 94-86 loss to Ithaca College. The Red Dragons shot 48% for the game, but the Bombers shot it at 58% in capturing the nonconference road win.

Senior Brian Hooks (Cohoes, Shaker) was the top man today for Oneonta (1-6), scoring 20 points in 31 minutes of action. Classmates Troy Talbot (Brooklyn, The School for Legal Studies), Derek Hahn (Youngsville, Sullivan West) and Shane Gillette (Hurley, Kingston) contributed 18, 14 and 12 points respectively. Junior Terrence Parker (Queens, John Adams) was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points.

Oneonta held a lead of 69-67 on a layup by Parker at the 12:17 mark of the second half, but an 11-2 run by Ithaca (7-2) gave them a nine-point lead at 80-71 with 8:18 remaining.

The Red Dragons got as close as five points at 89-84 on a pair of free throws by Talbot, but the Bombers' Jordan Marcus made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch for the final margin of victory.

The Bombers had five players in double figures today as well, led by freshman Miles Grier, who scored a game high 21 points.

Both teams shot lights out in the first half while scoring a combined 107 points. Oneonta finished the half at 65% while Ithaca shot 60%. There were five ties and five lead changes during the first twenty minutes of action.

Hooks poured in 16 of his team high 20 points in the first half in helping Oneonta hold onto a seven point lead for most of the opening half.

Ithaca made a late run and took a 33-32 lead on a three-point basket by Christian Jordan at the 7:18 mark. The lead exchanged back-and-forth over the remainder of the half with the Bombers taking a 55-52 lead into the break. Grier led Ithaca with 14 points.

Oneonta will not be action again until the new year when they travel to the Washington & Lee Tournament on Jan. 2-3. The Red Dragons opening opponent will be Wells College.
