Oswego State Wins Conference Opener Against Fredonia 71-48

Strong defense and sharp shooting helped the Oswego State men's basketball team record a 71-48 conference win over host Fredonia on Friday night. Chad Burridge and Chris Gilkes combined to shoot 16-for-20 from the field and scored 37 points for the Lakers, who moved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The two teams battled back and forth for the better part of the first half and were tied at 18 with seven minutes remaining in the period. Three consecutive lay-ups by Gilkes sparked a 13-4 run to give the Lakers a 31-22 halftime lead.

Oswego State went on another run early in the second half, a 13-0 stretch, that gave it a 23-point cushion. Conor Monaghan chipped in 11 points and three blocks to keep the Lakers lead safe. As a team, Oswego State shot 23-for-31 from inside the arc and 58.7 percent overall. The Blue Devils were paced by Joseph Monahan's 13 points, but shot only 37.5 percent from the field during the contest.

 

The Lakers blocked seven shots, four of which were by Burridge.  Gilkes added five steals to his 18-point performance.

Oswego State travels to Buffalo State on Saturday to face the Bengals at 4 p.m.
