Cougars Right Ship With 81-68 Win Over Anna Maria

Paxton, Mass. – Visiting Clark University shot a season-high 50 percent from the field and snapped a three-game losing streak with an 81-68 win over Anna Maria in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

Clark has now won their last four meetings with Anna Maria by an average of nearly 14 points dating back to the 2006-07 season.

With the win, the Cougars improve their record to 2-3 overall, while the AMCATS see their record dip back to 2-2.

The Cougar offense was a balanced attack led once again by junior Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) who finished with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds. Classmate Travis Curley (Trumbull, Conn.) racked up 16 points, while both Tucker Esborn (Branford, Conn.) and Mitch Renshaw (Rutland, Mass.) each added 13 points.

Clark led by as many as eight in the first half, but Anna Maria fought back, going on an 11-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with a little less than six minutes left in the half. The Cougars answered right back when Brent Abendroth (Toledo, Ohio) dropped in a transition three-pointer and Vayda nailed a triple of his own to swing momentum back to Clark and the Scarlet and White went into halftime with a 32-31 edge.

The game was tied four times in the first ten minutes of the second half before the Cougars got some separation as Esborn, Vayda, Curley and Sam Baker (Salem, Mass.) all scored during an 11-3 run that gave Clark a 57-48 lead with less than eight minutes left to play.

Anna Maria never got closer than six the rest of the way as Clark connected on 14-of-16 free throws in the final 1:24 to seal the contest.

The Cougars made 23 of their 46 shots and had 16 assists attached to their baskets. Clark also made seven of their 13 three-point attempts, while the AMCATS struggled from behind the arc, going just 5-for-23.

In addition to its double figure scorers, the Cougars got an excellent all-around performance from Drew Billington (Fairfield, Conn.) who finished with seven points, five rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes.

Sophomore Anthony Click paced Anna Maria with an extremely efficient 21 points (7-for-9 field goals, 7-for-7 free throws) to go along with five steals, four assists and three rebounds. Meanwhile the backcourt combination of Junior De La Hoz and Chris Pinsonault scored 24 points but connected on just nine of their 30 shot attempts.

Clark will return to action next Tuesday when they visit Brandeis University beginning at 8:00 p.m.
