Rivier removes Purcell's interim tag

More news about: Rivier

Former Rivier women's basketball player Deanna Purcell has had the interim tag removed and will be the head women's basketball coach for the Raiders. Purcell served as an assistant coach this past season under former coach Paul Williams, and was elevated to interim head coach on Feb. 1, 2020.

Purcell replaced Williams with seven games remaining in the 2019-20 season. The program was 4-13 at the time and finished 4-20. Williams finished 101-142 in his career at Rivier.

"With Rivier as my alma mater, I could not imagine starting my head coach career anywhere else," said the excited Purcell. "I am so excited to give back to a program and university that has given me so much."

She inherits a program that finished 4-20 last season. However, there are several key student-athletes in place to build around and the program believes that the incoming class that Purcell has been able to obtain will be difference-makers.

"I look forward to working with a great group of student-athletes to bring the program the same success I had as a player," Purcell said. "And to play a part in these young women building relationships, memories, and life lessons that will stay with them well after their athletic careers end."

The 2015 Rivier graduate is the program leader in multiple career statistics.

Purcell is the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,192 points in 106 games played. She averaged 20.6 points per game in the Raider blue and white while shooting 50.1 percent from the floor in her career. She was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference all-conference first team in all four years of eligibility and was also selected the conference's Rookie of the Year (2012) and Player of the Year (2015).

She holds the GNAC and program rookie record for points scored in a season (582 in 2011-12) and her teams held an overall record of 64-42 with a 35-12 mark against the conference. She led her teams to the GNAC tournament all four seasons with two appearances in the GNAC semifinals and two appearances in the ECAC Tournament.

Purcell also garnered honors from the New Hampshire Division III Coaches Association as she was tabbed to the All-State first team three times and second team once. Purcell was also selected as the All-State Player of the Year (2014) and Freshman of the Year (2012) along with being selected to the 2015 D3hoops.com All-Northeast Fourth team.

Purcell earned her undergraduate degree in history from Rivier in 2015 and also earned her masters degree in special education from Rivier in 2019.
