Jason Ellis scored 51 points to lead No. 8 Marietta to victory over John Carroll while Division III's active career scoring leader added another milestone to his resume. Elsewhere No. 8 Randolph-Macon stayed hot and New England produced a baffling upset.

Marietta seized an early upper hand in the OAC race with a 104-98 win over visiting John Carroll thanks to Ellis' career night. With his team trailing by one, Ellis scored five straight points to put the Pioneers (6-0, 3-0 OAC) ahead for good. His eighth three of the night put Marietta up 95-87 with a little over a minute left and his 14th and 15th free throws of the night put the game out of reach for good.

"We won this game today because of Jason," said Marietta coach Jon VanderWal after the game. "It was obviously a team effort as we did a great job of finding him. But that's one of the greatest Marietta College single game performances ever." Ellis finished three short of the College's single-game record scored by Don Whiting over 100 years ago.

Ryan Berger scored 33 points in 31 minutes on 11-for-22 shooting with five 3-pointers for John Carroll (5-2, 0-2 OAC).

Jake Ross, who is Division III's active career scoring leader, became the all-time scoring leader at Springfield with 26 points and the Pride needed every one of those points to beat Williams, 76-75. Heath Post's free throws in the closing minute were the difference as the Pride (7-0) beat the Ephs for the first time since 2004. Ross entered the weekend as top scorer in all of NCAA basketball with 31.7 points per game.

In the day's only matchup of ranked teams, No. 9 Randolph-Macon comfortably defeated No. 18 Christopher Newport, 79-62. The Yellow Jackets (9-0) shot 68 percent in the second half (17-for-25) and led by 22 until the Captains (7-3) closed the deficit before the final buzzer. Freshman Miles Mallory had a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) and four blocks for Randolph-Macon.

The most puzzling result of the season so far came in Massachusetts where winless Lasell stunned unbeaten and seventh-ranked Nichols, 96-89. Four of the Lasers' starters combined for 86 points led by Kevin Nunez who had 29 points in 40 minutes. Lasell, which lost four straight games earlier this season by a combined 118 points, improved 1-8.

No. 15 Johns Hopkins rallied past Muhlenberg 59-55 in a low-scoring battle between undefeated Centennial Conference teams. The Blue Jays (8-0, 3-0 Centennial) held the Mules to 20 points in the second half. Top-ranked Swarthmore crushed Gettysburg 95-63 in a game where the teams used 33 players combined. Conor Harkins scored 22 points for the Garnet (8-0, 3-0 Centennial).

No. 24 Augustana survived a scare from Carroll at home and edged the Pioneers in overtime, 65-63, to give Grey Giovanine his 500th career win. Down 1 in overtime with under 10 seconds to play, Carroll had a chance to win the game at the free throw but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Illinois Wesleyan knocked off No. 21 Carthage 95-91, dealing the Red Men their first loss of the season.

Virginia Wesleyan used a 9-0 run late in the second half to snap No. 16 Guilford's eight-game winning streak, 64-57. Daniel Spencer scored 15 points off the bench for the Marlins (7-1, 2-0 ODAC) whose reserves outscored the Quakers' 30-8.

SUNY Purchase guard Elijah Lott just missed a triple-double, notching 27 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, but the Panthers were otherwise on target in a 97-76 win over previously unbeaten Hamilton. SUNY Purchase (3-4) shot 53 percent and ourebounded the Continentals 50-32.
