Less than two weeks after losing its head women's basketball coach to a Division II school, Buffalo State promoted the program's lead assistant into the vacancy.

Buffalo State announced that Marybeth Nugent will replace Kevin Clifford as its new head coach.

Nugent was Clifford's lead assistant the past three seasons. She was a standout player at NAIA member Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y. where she started all 124 games of her four-year career. Before coming to Buffalo State, she was the junior varsity coach at Williamsville (N.Y.) South High School and coached an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team.

Clifford accepted the head coaching job at Division II Roberts Wesleyan on Aug. 31. He went 30-47 in three seasons at Buffalo State following three seasons at Mount St. Vincent and five at CCNY. His overall record in Division III was 108-164 in 11 seasons.

Buffalo State finished 13-14, 8-10 in the SUNYAC last season.
