Saturday women: UR snaps Saints' streak

No. 21 Rochester rallied past No. 5 Thomas More to beat the Saints 61-58 and end a regular season winning streak that goes back almost five years.

Thomas More appeared to be on its way to another regular season victory as the Saints held a 56-45 lead with seven minutes to play at Rochester. After a series of empty possessions for both teams, All-American center Alexandra Leslie scored a layup to key a 9-0 Rochester run. Madison Temple made two free throws for Thomas More to extend the lead to 58-54, but the Saints would not score again. Rochester's Lauren Deming hit a three to cut the deficit to one with two minutes to play and then hit another to give the Yellowjackets the lead. Thomas More had two more possesions to tie or take the lead, but came up empty on both. Recap

Before tonight, Thomas More's last loss in the regular season came on November 23, 2012 when the Saints lost in overtime to Calvin. The Saints had won 97 straight regular season games, not including the games vacated from the 2014-15 season. Deming and Leslie each scored 20 points for Rochester (2-0) while Abby Owings led Thomas More (1-1) with 19 points.

Bowdoin made its first six 3-point shots and never looked back in a 80-68 victory over No. 4 St. Thomas. The Polar Bears shot 68 percent from the floor and 77 percent from three in the first half. Abby Kelly scored 27 points for Bowdoin (2-0) and five different Polar Bears made at least two 3-pointers. The loss ends St. Thomas' 32-game regular season winning streak. Recap

Caitlin Knueppel scored 18 points to lead Wisconsin Lutheran past No. 10 Washington U. 63-50 and give the Warriors a victory in the event named after her grandfather, former WLC men's basketball coach Paul Knueppel. Caitlin shot 4-for-7 from three and Jen Dowden added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Caitlin is the daughter of Wisconsin Lutheran's women's head coach Klay Knueppel. Recap

George Fox upended No. 12 Trinity (Texas) 65-61 behind Kaitlin Jamieson's 22-point, 13-rebound performance. The Bruins outrebounded Trinity 43-30 and overcame 33 turnovers. Micah Weaver tallied 27 points and seven steals for the Tigers. Box score

No. 13 Hope edged past defending HCAC champion Rose-Hulman 63-58 despite Ally Bromenschenkel's 22 points. The Fightin' Engineers led Hope late in the fourth quarter until Jacquelyn Schwartz hit a three-pointer with 36 seconds left to put the Flying Dutch on top 60-58.

No. 25 Illinois Wesleyan shook off a slow start and cruised past No. 22 Chicago 77-56. The Titans outscored the Maroons by 23 over the final three periods and held Chicago to 25 percent (14-for-56). Ithaca knocked off No. 23 Montclair State 66-56 to win the finale of its opening weekend tournament. The Bombers turned 22 Montclair turnovers into 24 points.

Messiah wore down SUNY Geneseo 63-51 in a game where both teams shot under 40 percent. Maci Thornton scored 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting for the Falcons. Alexis Quenneville hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left to push Castleton past Bates 76-75.
