John Carroll stayed in house and in the family to find its new head men's basketball coach. Pete Moran, whose father Mike just finished a 25-year tenure as the Blue Streaks' head coach, was named to the post.

JCU Director of Varsity Athletics and Recreation Laurie Massa announced the hiring on Friday morning.

"Pete has been an important member of the John Carroll community, and has impacted our basketball success, both as a student and a coach," Massa said in a release.  "His connections in Cleveland and efforts to recruit throughout the region will continue to support our enrollment efforts, and the winning tradition of our program."

Pete Moran had been an assistant coach on his father's staff the past five seasons, which included trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2016. He also started at point guard for the Blue Streaks for four seasons. Moran started 26 games as a freshman on the John Carroll team that advanced to the national semifinals in 2004. He also started on two teams that reached the NCAA Tournament sectional semifinals and was a three-time All-OAC selection.

"This time of year, many coaches stand behind a podium and say how incredibly excited they are for the opportunity to lead a program," said Pete Moran.  "However, I can say with a hundred percent certainty that no one means it as much as I do. John Carroll University is responsible for all the good that has happened in my life. Relationships with former teammates that continue to grow, coaching staff in which became family, memories of playing in the final four with my brother Matt and the night I met my wife in Grasselli Library, on campus. I can't think of a greater service to the university then to lead this program into its next chapter."

Pete Moran was previously head coach at Berkshire High School in Burton, Ohio. He led the team to three conference titles and two district championships and was named conference coach of the year three times.

Pete replaces his father Mike who went 459-230 over his 25-year career as the Blue Streaks' head coach.

John Carroll finished 17-8, 14-4 in the OAC last season.
