Dick Whitmore is back in Division III basketball.

The former Colby coach, winner of 637 games for the White Mules, won his first for Thomas College on Saturday as the Terriers defeated Green Mountain 89-84 to remain in the hunt for a first-round home game in the North Atlantic Conference tournament.

Whitmore replaces Darrell Alexander, who was relieved of his duties as coach earlier in the week, following what sources tell D3sports.com was a "really profane" ejection from a game at Lyndon State on Feb. 8.

Alexander was hit with his second technical foul of the game with 31 seconds left. After a long, vocal tirade in which a team member had to escort Alexander out, Lyndon State hit both free throws to seal a 90-61 win.

"He swore a lot," Thomas sophomore Levi Barnes told the Morning Sentinel. "We knew that something was going to happen because of the situation that happened at the game, but we didn’t know it was going to be that serious."

A 2010 graduate of Thomas in his first year as coach, Alexander was the second person named coach this past offseason. Jon Hayes had originally been named head coach and left.

Thomas was 9-12 under Alexander, 9-5 in the NAC.
