Verkaik, Hunt win 2013 Jostens Trophy

Calvin's Carissa Verkaik and Randolph's Colton Hunt were named winners of the 2013 Jostens Trophy, awarded to the top overall student-athletes in Division III basketball.

They were tops among 10 men's and 11 women's finalists, announced last week.

Hunt, who led Randolph to the first NCAA Tournament appearance in the program's history, led the ODAC in scoring at 24.2 points per game, scoring in double figures in 27 of his 28 games, including six games of 30 points or more. He was the 2013 D3hoops.com South Region Player of the Year.

Verkaik completed her career as Calvin’s all-time leader in scoring (2,236), rebounds (1,071) and blocked shots (440). She is currently ranked third on the all-time Division III women’s basketball list in blocked shots and 14th in points. She was the 2013 D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year.

Off the court, Hunt is an economics major with a 3.94 GPA, while Verkaik majors in elementary education with a 3.76 GPA. Each was recently named the NCAA Division III Academic All-America® of the Year by CoSIDA.

They will be honored on Thursday, March 21, in Salem, Va., as part of the festivities surrounding the Division III men's basketball quarterfinals and semifinals.
