Gallaudet men's basketball head coach Jeb Barber has stepped down from his post and will transition into a newly formed game management/assistant sports information director position and continue as the department's NCAA compliance officer.
"Coach Barber has done a great deal to help our men's basketball program reach a new level and for that we thank him for his time and commitment to our student-athletes," said Gallaudet athletic director Michael Weinstock.
Barber accumulated a 50-76 record in five seasons guiding the men's basketball program. Gallaudet joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference two years ago and during that span the Bison have posted an overall winning record of 28-24 and a 20-12 mark in conference play. In more than 105 years Gallaudet has only had a 10-win season 16 times, but under Barber this feat occurred three times.
"I want to thank Michael Weinstock for giving me the opportunity to lead this program to new heights and achievements," said Barber. "I am extremely proud to have had the honor to further many young men's life skills and impart a little basketball knowledge along the way. I will continue to be a staunch supporter to all that is Buff and Blue."
In 2010-11, the Bison had their first winning season since and reached the NEAC semifinals where GU lost 96-91 to Penn State-Harrisburg in overtime. Gallaudet made its first postseason appearance in school history when it was selected to participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South tournament. The Bison made the short trip across town to face Catholic in the quarterfinals where GU came up short 66-58. Gallaudet finished the year with a 17-11 record; the 17 wins are the most in program history dating back to 1904. The winning record was only the fifth in the past 25 years at Gallaudet.
Barber coached five All-NEAC honorees including two first-team selections in Layton Seeber (2010-11) and Brandon McMillan (2011-12) in two seasons. While in the Capital Athletic Conference one Bison earned All-CAC honors during the 2008-09 season when Sekoe White was selected to the second team.
The department will begin a search for the next men's basketball coach immediately.
