Amherst, UWSP clinch titles

Jaci Daigneault and Amherst are on roll heading to the NESCAC tournament.

No. 2 Amherst finished an undefeated run through the NESCAC in satisfying fashion. The Lord Jeffs defeated arch rival No. 19 Williams in its gym, 66-55.

Amherst scored the game's first six points and never trailed against Williams. The Lord Jeffs had 10 steals and converted 15 Ephs' turnovers into 17 points. Jaci Daigneault paced Amherst's balanced attack with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Lord Jeffs will host Trinity (Conn.) in the first round of the NESCAC playoffs next Saturday.

No. 4 UW-Stevens Point had plenty to celebrate on Senior Day. The Pointers defeated UW-River Falls 71-58 to clinch the WIAC regular season title. Seniors Britta Petersen, Andrea Flease and Christin Coles combined for 30 points and eight assists. The Pointers will have a first round bye and home court advantage in the conference playoffs.

Averett stunned No. 8 Christopher Newport 58-50. Chelsie Schweers scored 28 points for the Captains but the rest of her team shot just 30 percent (nine for 30). The Cougars improve to 13-10, 8-8 in conference.

Penn State-Harrisburg dealt Gallaudet its first loss of the season, 64-53. The Lions hit seven three pointers compared to just one for the Bison. Gallaudet's loss leaves Division III with four undefeated women's teams, including No. 13 Denision who stifled Allegheny 78-55.

Johns Hopkins wrapped up the Centennial Conference regular season championship by routing Ursinus 72-48. Daniel Webster did the same in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 59-40 victory over Wheelock. The Eagles have won 20 consecutive games. Hanover cruised past Earlham 82-47 for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. The Panthers also set a new single season record for wins with 21.

Westminster (Mo.) beat Blackburn 81-63 to win its first ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. Minnesota-Morris held off Northwestern (Minn.) 53-52 to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title. The UMAC tournament winner will receive the Conference's first automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan moved a step closer to securing home court in the CCIW playoffs with a 65-63 win at Wheaton (Ill.). Stacey Arlis' layup with a minute to play gave the Titans the lead for good. Arlis finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Geneseo State will have to wait to win the SUNYAC title. New Paltz State beat the Blue Knights 53-47 to snap their 15 game winning streak.
