Alex Simonka, who was the women's basketball coach at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to the Associated Press and The Day, a newspaper in New London, Conn. He was found in his car on campus Saturday night, March 14.

Simonka was also the business manager for the athletic department. His team finished 5-21 this past season.

A 1999 CGA Hall of Fame inductee, Simonka was a three-sport star during his days as a cadet and a member of the class of 1979. He played football, basketball and baseball.
