How high can Grotberg go?

More news about: Grinnell

John Grotberg recently became the top scorer in his school's history, which, at Grinnell, is saying something. But where could he end up?

Grotberg, who surpassed the 2,000-point mark last February, had 2,421 career points entering Tuesday night's game at Lake Forest. And since the senior is averaging 34.8 points per game, the 2,500-point milestone seems like a lock. That's a level achieved by only two players since the turn of the century. He's currently 18th in Division III history, with Anna Maria's John Patraitis at 2,434 points next on the list.

The Pioneers have 13 regular-season games left. If he averages 34.8 points over that stretch, that would put him at 2,873 points, enough for third in Division III history. If Grinnell makes the Midwest Conference tournament -- four teams qualify -- he'd be able to pass Misericordia's Willie Chandler at 2,898 without exceeding his average.

But that's only enough for the No. 2 spot. No. 1 is a longer way off. That's the spot held by Andre Foreman, who scored 2,940 points for Salisbury State in the late '80s and early '90s. If Grotberg maintained his average, Grinnell would need to make the MWC finals. But 15 games at 34.8 points would put him just over the top.

If Grinnell doesn't make the MWC tournament, Grotberg would need to average 40 points exactly over the Pioneers' final 13 games to set the record.
