Though Tony Shaver isn't returning to Hampden-Sydney, one of his key assistants and former players is. The Tigers announced Dee Vick, an assistant to Shaver at Division I William & Mary, as their next men's basketball head coach.

Vick was a starting shooting guard for three years under Shaver and played for four years during which Hampden-Sydney went 79-31 (.718) with two ODAC titles and NCAA tournament Sweet 16 appearances. After graduating in 1994, Vick joined Shaver's coaching staff for four more NCAA Tournament trips including the Tigers' 1999 run to the national championship game where the Tigers lost to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double overtime.

“Our expectations will remain the same and that will be to win conference championships and compete at a national level,” said Vick. “I will never forget the double-overtime loss to Wisconsin-Platteville in the 1999 national championship game. We have some unfinished business and I hope we can hang that elusive national championship banner one day.”

Vick replaces Bubba Smith who moved to Sewanee after going 94-36 (.723) in five seasons with the Tigers. In addition to his time at William & Mary, Vick coached at East Carolina for two seasons, South Carolina for one and College of Charleston for one. The Tigers went 15-12, 8-10 in the ODAC last season.
