D3hoops Classic: Reds roll, Pointers perservere

Carthage blew the game open with a 36-10 run early in the first half and answered a 17-1 Whitewater lead with an 8-0 run of its own as the No. 16 Lady Reds rolled past the No. 8 Warhawks 91-77.

UW-Whitewater gets Ohio Northern tomorrow afternoon after the Polar Bears took care of Baruch, 62-48. Ohio Northern stifled the Bearcats with a zone defense and got a big performance from Jordan Kimes (15 points, 12 rebounds) in the victory. Photos

On the men's side, No. 1 UW-Stevens Point continued its undefeated run through the gantlet of Division III national contenders. After the Pointers held off Whitworth on Saturday night, they battled past Whitman 89-79 in overtime. Photo gallery.

Stevens Point had a two-point lead and the ball with 30 seconds left in regulation, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Whitman raced down the court and found Josh Duckworth who hit a tough runner off the glass with 1.9 seconds left to tie the game.

In overtime Whitman built a four-point lead before the Pointers rallied to tie it. Stevens Point's Austin Ryf stripped Duckworth and Tyler Tillema followed that with a layup to give the Pointers the lead. Whitman coach Eric Bridgeland exploded after Tillema's basket, picking up two technical fouls and getting ejected. The Pointers converted the free throws and pulled away for the win.

Trevor Hass scored 40 points to tie a school record and take home the Most Outstanding Player award. Hass carried the Pointers offense in the second half when Tillema, who finished with 25 points, sat with four fouls.

Whitworth defeated UW-Platteville 84-77 to give the NWC a split of its six games with the WIAC foes. Colton McCargar had 21 points for the Pirates who outrebounded the Pioneers 39-20.

Bridgewater State rallied past Linfield 66-65 to win its second game at the classic. Linfield had the ball with three seconds left but Adam Myren's spinning jumper was off the mark. Tyler DeMelo scored 14 points off the bench for the Bears.

In early women's action, Southwestern came from behind to beat Occidental 57-51. Cara Sheffer hit a 3-pointer to key a 17-6 Pirates run. Southwestern's Jordan Owens scored 23 points, giving her 48 in two games at the Classic. Photos
