PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Led by junior center Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) with 13 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in an all-around performance the Cardinals came from behind late to beat Clarkson 54-52 in non-conference action. After trailing by four with less than three minutes to play, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team came from behind to win after an and-one layup from Walcott gave them the lead late in the fourth quarter.
Lauren LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) and Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) both contributed to the win with eight points each while Wilson also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) led the team in assists with a career-high five to go along with her six points and two steals. Sophomore guard Selma Deisz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) had a solid night as well with seven points and two rebounds.
For the Golden Knights, Cassidy Dumont led all scorers with 14 points. Raelin Burns and Bella Doyle were also in double figures with 13 and 10 respectively while Doyle led the team in rebounds and assists with seven and five respectively.
Clarkson had a solid shooting night shooting 38.3% from the field and 92.9% at the stripe while the Cardinals only shot 31.7% from the field and 63.6% from the stripe. The difference came from the three-point line where the Cardinals made 7 of 26 at 26.9% and the Golden Knights only 3 of 16 at 18.8%. The Cardinals had fewer turnovers on the night with 13 and got 16 points off turnovers compared to Clarkson who had 19 turnovers and got 12 points off turnovers.
Plattsburgh State rises to 3-2 with the win and next opens up SUNYAC play at Morrisville on Friday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. Clarkson falls to 2-3 with the loss and next travels to Potsdam on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
The first quarter saw the Cardinals jump out to a quick 4-0 lead with back-to-back layups from Deisz and Wilson. Clarkson responded with a 6-0 burst and made the score 6-4 Golden Knights with a little over seven minutes remaining in the first. Plattsburgh regained the lead after a three from LaFountain and a jumper from Walcott made the score 12-8 Cardinals with less than three minutes to go. The Cardinals closed out the quarter with a layup from Kaelyn Morgan (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay Central) that made the score 20-15 Cardinals after one.
The Cardinals didn't take long to get on the board as Greek opened the second quarter with a dagger from behind the arc. Clarkson responded with a 9-0 run and took a 24-23 lead momentarily before a 6-0 Plattsburgh run made the score 29-24 Cardinals with less than four minutes remaining in the second. After both teams traded two made free throws back-to-back the Cardinals went into halftime up 33-31.
Clarkson struck early in the third quarter scoring back-to-back baskets and retook the lead 35-33. Plattsburgh cut the Golden Knights' lead to one on multiple occasions but still trailed with a little over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. Clarkson held the lead for the rest of the third quarter until layups from Morgan and Walcott ended the third and gave Plattsburgh a 40-39 lead after three-quarters of play.
A three from Wilson to open the fourth quarter extended the Cardinals' lead but a layup from Fallon Griffin followed by a three from Dumont gave Clarkson a 44-43 lead. While a three from LaFountain cut Clarkson's lead to two, Dumont responded with a jumper that made the score 52-48 Golden Knights with less than three minutes remaining. A pull-up jumper from Greek brought the Cardinals closer as they only trailed by one with a little over two minutes remaining. After a steal from LaFountain, Walcott put in a layup plus the free throw and put the Cardinal ahead 53-52 late in the fourth quarter. Clarkson had an opportunity to retake the lead but a clutch play on the defensive end by Greek followed by another defensive stance that resulted in a blocked shot by Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) kept the score at 53-52. After being fouled, Johannesen cushioned Plattsburgh's lead to 54-52 as the Cardinal's defense stood tall and secured a 54-52 victory.
