DUDLEY, Mass. (11/18/2024) - The Nichols College women's basketball team rallied thrillingly to claim their second consecutive victory, defeating Anna Maria College, 89-80 at the Nichols Athletic Center.
With the win, the Bison improve to 2-0 on the season, while the AMCATS drop to 1-4 with the loss.
Graduate student Abrianna Vazquez led the charge for the Bison, pouring in 26 points. Summer Klein delivered a solid all-around performance with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Adriana Romano added 13 points to the scoreboard. The Bison also showcased their defensive prowess, leading the game in blocks 4-1.
Anna Maria seized the early momentum, outscoring the Bison in the first and second quarters. Throughout the first half, the AMCATS held as much as a 14-point lead on three separate occassions, before claiming their largest lead of 15 points with 1:20 left in the second quarter. Heading into halftime, Nichols trailed the AMCATS by a 35-47 margin, but showed no signs of backing down.
The Bison emerged from the locker room with renewed energy and delivered an explosive third quarter, outscoring Anna Maria 33-19 to flip the game's momentum in their favor. The quarter also featured a 9-0 run by the Bison, with five of the points belonging to Vazquez.
Romano opened the final frame with a triple at 9:44, which spearheaded a 12-6 run by the Bison to extend their lead to eight points, 80-72. With under three minutes to play, the Bison traded points up and down the floor with the AMCATS, denying them any chance at a comback late. Nichols went on to complete the win, with some help from trips to the free-throw line.
The Bison will look to keep the momentum rolling when they face Western Connecticut State (1-2) on Thursday, November 21st at 6:00 PM on the road.
