Vassar Sees Winning Streak End At William Smith

Geneva, NY – The #RV/20 Vassar College Women's Basketball team saw its 21-game winning streak stopped Friday evening in a tight 49-48 Liberty League defeat on the road at William Smith. Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) led a pair of Brewers in double-figures with a team-high 16 points.

 

Friday's loss, Vassar's first since a 70-62 defeat at New Paltz on November 14, drops the Brewers to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in Liberty League competition. William Smith improves to 7-17 overall and 7-10 in league play and stops a seven-game skid to Vassar.

 

First Half

  • Vassar went just one for its first nine from the field in the contest as the Herons opened a 13-2 lead on a Brooke Jarvis layup with just a shade under four minutes left in the opening period.
  • A Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) triple halted the run for the Brewers, but would be the last Vassar bucket until another McDermed conversion just under two minutes later.
  • Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) brought the Brewers to within 16-9 after 10 minutes with a layup with 1:05 left in the first quarter.
  • Vassar finished the opening frame just 4-for-17 from the floor and went 1-for-8 from behind the arc.
  • The Herons converted at an even 40-percent in the first period and connected on three of their five three-point attempts.
  • The Brewers opened the second frame with the first seven points, including a three-pointer from Harvey, to get the game even at 16-16 with 8:41 to play in the first half.
  • The Brewers would not grab their first lead of the contest until the 2:03 mark of the second quarter when Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) converted a layup to push Vassar in front 24-23.
  • Miranda Martin responded with the final three points of the half for William Smith to send the Herons into the intermission leading 26-24.
  • Vassar improved to 41.7-percent shooting in the second stanza, but closed the first half converting at 31-percent.
  • William Smith was held to 18.8-percent shooting in the second quarter and finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 29-percent.

 

Second Half

  • Coming out of halftime, the Herons scored the first five points to open a 31-24 advantage on an Amelia McCulley jumper with 6:57 left in the frame.
  • The Brewers battled back with the next seven points, capped by a McDermed three-pointer at the 4:42 mark.
  • A pair of McDermed free-throws pushed the Brewers in front 33-32 with just under three minutes left in the stanza.
  • Vassar grabbed its largest lead of the game when a Harvey conversion in the final half minute of the third period gave the Brewers a 37-34 lead.
  • William Smith would answer right back with a bucket in the closing seconds to slice its disadvantage to 37-36 heading into the fourth period.
  • The Herons opened the final period with another 7-0 run, capped by a Molly Walsh triple to surge in front 43-37.
  • William Smith maintained the lead until the 2:55 mark when Harvey hit a jumper in the paint to knot the score at 45-45.
  • Jarvis answered with a bucket to give the Herons back the lead on the ensuing possession.
  • Vassar would knot the score at 47-47 when McDermed knocked down a jumper with 32 seconds left.
  • Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) later forced a turnover and was fouled, converting one free-throw to give the Brewers a 48-47 advantage with 23 seconds left in regulation.
  • Jarvis was the answer again for the Herons with three ticks left with what proved to be the deciding bucket.
  • Vassar had a look at the horn, but could not convert.
  • The Brewers shot 35.7-percent after halftime and went 1-for-11 from three-point range.
  • William Smith converted just seven field goals after halftime, but outscored the Brewers from the free-throw line in the second half 8-3.

 

For The Brewers

  • Harvey equaled the game-high with 16 points, going 6-for-14 from the floor with a three-pointer. Harvey rounded out the night with seven rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • McDermed finished with 13 points and equaled the team-high with eight rebounds.
  • Gelb joined McDermed with eight caroms and chipped in nine points and team-highs with three assists and three steals.
  • Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) corralled seven rebounds for the Brewers.

 

For The Herons

  • Jarvis matched the game-high with 16 points and led all players with nine rebounds.
  • McCulley totaled 11 points, five rebounds and a game-high five steals.
  • Carly Scott handed out three assists.

 

Game Statistics

  • Vassar finished the game shooting 33.3-percent overall and went 3-for-22 from three-point range.
  • William Smith shot 27.6-percent and went 4-for-16 from behind the arc.
  • William Smith held a 13-7 edge in free-throw scoring, with each team misfiring on eight attempts.
  • Vassar held a slim 24-22 edge in paint points.
  • Second chance points were even at 13-13.
  • The William Smith bench outscored Vassar's 12-4.
