Geneva, NY – Bella Doyle posted her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team found itself on the short end of a 56-47 decision against William Smith in Liberty League action Friday night.
The Golden Knights dropped to 4-16 on the season and 2-11 in the Liberty League, while William Smith moved to 5-15 and 5-8. Clarkson takes on RIT on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson came out strong in the first quarter, up 9-3 following a layup from Bella Doyle at the 5:20 mark, but the Knights went cold for a stretch to end the period, as William Smith took the lead with a 12-0 run. Cassidy Dumont hit a jumper with 40 seconds to go to cut the margin to three, only to see the Herons score late in the period for a five-point lead.
Dumont's jumper late in the period was the only basket the Knights would make for a stretch of 10 minutes, as the team fell behind by nine until Addie Kea hit a shot at the 5:18 mark of the second quarter. William Smith nearly doubled up the Knights at 29-15, but Dumont hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut into the deficit. At the very close of the half, Dumont made a steal at the Herons end and dribbled up court, eventually passing back to Emma Chambers, who drilled a 3-pointer from the wing at the buzzer to pull Clarkson within five at the break.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the momentum halted with the halftime intermission. Clarkson made just one shot among its first 14 attempts, including nine misses from the 3-point arc, in the third quarter until Raelin Burns hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining. William Smith did just enough in the period to push its lead back to double digits, closing the quarter up by 12.
Both teams were quiet at the start of the fourth quarter, including a three-minute stretch without a point for either team near the midway mark. Clarkson got back to within single digits on a jumper from Dumont with just under three minutes to go, but two more baskets from William Smith's Brooke Jarvis returned the margin to double figures, and the Herons held on for the win.
Doyle closed with the double-double, while Cassidy Dumont chipped in 12 points and Raelin Burns tossed in 11 points.
For William Smith, Brooke Jarvis had a double-double, scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds. Miranda Martin came off the bench and nearly had a double-double as well, scoring 15 points to go along with nine boards.
