Third Quarter Surge Powers Wolves Past Mounties

ALTOONA, Pa. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team took the lead behind a 21-8 third quarter and continued on to a 62-52 victory over Mount Aloysius College in the first game of the Mountain Valley Tipoff Classic.

Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) led Keuka College (2-1) with a career-high 18 points. Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) continued her hot start with 14 points and Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) added a career-best 12 rebounds to lead the Green and Gold.

Keuka College 62 vs. Mount Aloysius College 52

The Mounties took the early lead over the Wolves and held it for the first quarter. Mount Aloysius led by as many as six in the frame. A late basket by Lauren Hill cut it to four, 15-11 after the first.

Mount Aloysius continued to play with the lead in the second. Sydney Brown knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions to cut the margin down to one midway through the frame. Keuka College would take the lead on a jumper by Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) with 2:18 left in the half. However, the Mounties would score the final five points in the half and led 26-23 at the break.

The Mounties added to their lead with a 6-2 open to the third, but then the Wolves would take control. Over the final eight minutes, Keuka College outscored Mount Aloysius 19-2 on the back of 17 unanswered points. Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) had a second-chance layup giving the Wolves a 33-32 lead. The run continued for the Wolves and Keuka College took a 10-point lead, 44-34 into the final quarter.

The Wolves pushed their lead to 12 in the early minutes, but Mount Aloysius went on a 10-0 run to make it 53-52 Wolves with 2:55 left in regulation. Following a Keuka timeout, Killian Mahoney found Sydney Brown for a layup to snap the run. The Green and Gold did what they needed to do from the free throw line to close out the game. Keuka College ended the game with nine unanswered to defeat the Mounties 62-52 on Saturday.

  • Saturday was the first-ever meeting between Keuka College and Mount Aloysius College
  • The Wolves held the Mounties to 20-70 from the floor. It was the lowest shooting percentage allowed this season by the Wolves
  • Mary Cotter was the leading reserve for the Wolves with eight points. Keuka College outscored the Mounties 15-2 in bench scoring
  • Cotter also led the Wolves with six assists, a career-best
  • Killian Mahoney knocked down a pair of threes while moving into the top ten for career three-point attempts at Keuka College
  • Mahoney's 12 rebounds was the first double-digit rebounding total for the Wolves this season

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves conclude the Mountain Valley Tipoff Classic on Sunday. Keuka College will face Penn State Altoona. The game will be played on the campus of Mount Aloysius College. It will be the first meeting between the Wolves and the Lions on the hardwood.
