Blake Notches First Career Double-Double as WPI Tripped Up by MIT

WORCESTER --- A 29-8 run to close out the first half propelled MIT to a 59-50 victory over WPI on Wednesday night despite a 14-point, 10-rebound effort from Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH), her first career double-double.

WPI (12-8, 2-3 NEWMAC) shot 30.8% from the floor on the night (20-of-65) making just four 3-pointers, while MIT (9-10, 3-2) was 22-of-52 in the game (42.3) knocking down eight treys.

MIT's Christina Antonakaki (Holmdel, NJ) led both teams with 23 points, six assists and three rebounds on the night while her teammate Annika Sougstad (Mahtomedi, MN) added 10 points and 11 boards. Helping out Blake and WPI were Alana Keating (Leominster, MA) and Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) who each finished with 11 points, while Vinson added six rebounds.

WPI did have 10 steals on the night and forced MIT into 17 turnovers, resulting in 17 points off of those turnovers.

After WPI got out to a fast 8-0 lead to start off the game, the Engineers of Worcester were held without a bucket for a 9:10 span, during which MIT raced out on a 17-0 run to take a 19-10 lead early into the second quarter. Eventually the Cardinal and Gray would extend that run to 29-8 to end the half with a 29-20 lead over WPI.

The Crimson and Gray got that lead down to six at the end of the third quarter and after MIT regained a 13-point lead, 46-33 thanks to a pair of Antonakaki free throws, WPI once again chipped away over the next three minutes getting it within five with two-and-a-half minutes to go, but were unable to get any closer falling 59-50.

WPI will continue play on Saturday afternoon when they head to Smith for a 2 p.m. contest while MIT heads to the Coast Guard for a 1pm tilt.
