The Emory University women's basketball team used a 15-0 game-ending run to knock off No.-22 ranked New York University, 74-59, Friday evening at Hunter College in Manhattan, NY.
The win gives the Eagles their sixth straight as the team improves to 11-2 and into a three-way tie atop the UAA standings through two games. The loss snaps NYU's seven-game win streak as the Violets fall to 11-2 and 1-1 in UAA competition.
With the game knotted at 59 mid-way through the final quarter, the Eagles held the Violets scoreless for the remaining 5:18 minutes, outscoring NYU by 15 during the closing moments to pull out the road victory. After falling behind 53-45, the Violets stormed back with a quick 14-6 stretch to tie the ballgame before senior Allison Chernow and the Eagles took over. Classmate Erin Lindahl made back-to-back layups to begin the run followed by sophomore Tori Huggins making the first of two free attempts with 3:23 to play. The score remained 64-59 until the final 89 seconds when Chernow scored the game's final 10 points including six straight from the line. The Eagles forced NYU to miss their final seven shots while causing four turnovers during the Violets' final six possessions.
Chernow was one of four Eagles to reach double figures in scoring as she finished with 15 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Lindahl had a season-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and nailed a pair from long range with Huggins notching her fifth consecutive double-double, chipping in 14 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Lindsey Tse netted double figures for the first time this season, rounding out the top scorers with 11 points. Junior Blair Ripley added a strong performance off the bench, posting seven points, nine rebounds and a game-high three blocks.
For the game, Emory went 27-for-55 (49.1%) from the floor while NYU finished 25-for-69 (36.2%). Both teams were 6-for-17 from behind the three-point arc. Jenny Walker led NYU scorers with a game-high 21 points with Brooke Shelton recording 12 in a reserve role.
The Eagles round out the UAA weekend Sunday afternoon at Brandeis University. The Judges collected their first conference win Friday night, defeat Rochester at home, 60-50, to improve to 11-2 and 1-1 in UAA play.
