Cortland Women Surge in Middle Quarters to Defeat Fredonia, 84-45

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland outscored visiting Fredonia by 27 points over a 12-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters and the Red Dragons defeated the Blue Devils, 84-45, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest.
 
The Red Dragons (10-1, 4-0 SUNYAC), who won their eighth straight game, finished the second quarter on a 13-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 38-21 halftime lead. Cortland built on that margin with a 24-8 streak over the first 6:37 of the third quarter to take a 62-29 lead and never looked back.
 
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) led Cortland with 19 points and five assists in just 24 minutes of action. She made 7-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-6 from 3-point territory. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) finished with 12 points and team highs of nine rebounds and four steals along with three assists, and Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) added 12 points, four assists and three steals.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) and Maggie Malone (Cornwall) each scored seven points. Longford also pulled down five rebounds and Malone grabbed four boards. Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) ended with five rebounds and three steals.
 
Morgan Davis led Fredonia (5-5, 1-2 SUNYAC) off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds. Lauren Mickley tallied nine points.
 
Cortland shot 47 percent overall and 38 percent (12-of-32) from the 3-point arc. The Red Dragons made six of their first eight 3-point attempts in the third quarter. Fredonia finished at 35 percent from the field and 20 percent (3-for-15) from deep. Cortland held a 25-9 advantage in points off of turnovers as a result of 26 Fredonia giveaways compared to only 12 Red Dragon turnovers, and 15 Cortland offensive rebounds helped the hosts build an 18-6 margin in second-chance points.
 
Cortland will host Oneonta on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a rare mid-week early afternoon game.
