Lynx Make History in Final Home Game of the Decade

Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball hosted Agnes Scott College, making history in their final game of the decade after sinking 19 of 41 three-point attempts en route to an 84-48 victory over the Scotties.

Nineteen made treys is the most in both Rhodes program history as well as Southern Athletic Association history and is the second highest of the season among NCAA Division III institutions. The NCAA record book has a minimum of 20 made baskets beyond the arc and the only SAA team on the list is Sewanee who tallied 24 the year before SAA play began. Sewanee's top SAA mark is 15 from the 2016-17 season.

Prior to the game, the most three-pointers tallied for the Lynx in a single game dating back to the 2001-02 season was 14, earned against Centre on Mar. 2, 2014. This season, Rhodes has sank 10 or more three-pointers in six of their 10 games.

It was a slow start for the Lynx who found themselves trailing the winless Scotties 5-2 before head coach Rodney Rogan called a timeout to gather the Lynx. Rhodes took their first and final lead of the game on a Kiera Downey jumper inside the paint with just under two minutes in the first quarter. The Lynx only led by two by the end but a 14-point run to start the second quarter opened the game. Agnes Scott then connected a three-pointer after five scoreless minutes. During the second frame, the Lynx held a 26-7 scoring advantage to lead 43-22 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Scotties recorded their longest run (seven points) before outscoring Rhodes 15-13. The Lynx rebounded in the final quarter for a 28-11 scoring advantage. Rhodes limited themselves to nine turnovers compared to Agnes Scott's 23. Overall the Lynx averaged 43.5 percent in the field and 46.3% behind the arc. During the first half only two free throws were shot, both by the Scotties.

The game was led by Lynx senior Alyssa Owens' 24 points. She went 6-of-11 from the arc and totaled nine field goals and five rebounds and three steals. Freshman Libby Long came in and secured 5-of-11 three-pointers for a career-high 17 points. Caroline Taylor also recorded a career-high eight assists while Downey and Ellen Hagen each tallied four assists. Hagen went 3-of-4 from teh arc while Downey adn Taylor both added two more and Alexys Mathangani one to total the record-breaking 19 treys.

Eight of Rhodes' treys came in the second quarter and seven in the fourth quarter after the Lynx opened the game with three in the first frame.

Rhodes will look ahead to opening conference play with three games to conclude the week. The Lynx will travel to Hendrix Tuesday before hitting the road for Berry (Friday) and Oglethorpe (Sunday).
